Are you ready for a February fitness reset? I am. I reach this point every year and feel like I’m beginning the healthy lifestyle that never really pans out as a result of resolutions at the start of a new year.
Why Resetting Your February Fitness Tends to Work
I haven’t found any research to back this claim up, so be warned that this is my opinion after watching my own habits and those of my clients over the years as a personal trainer. In January, we want a fresh start because of the turn of the calendar, but also because of another big thing: the end of the holidays.
The holiday season is great in a lot of ways, but it’s exhausting. From the weather to all the added responsibilities, to the changes in routine and the piles of food, it’s draining. Even when we’ve had the perfect fun and celebratory holiday season, when they new year arrives, we’re all ready to leave it behind. It feels like a natural time for a resolution for better habits. I tend to feel that February fitness and nutrition resets work far more realistically.
January is a Time of Recovery
Here’s why I feel that February fitness and nutrition resets are better than New Year’s resolutions. In January, we feel like we need a fresh start – and we do – but we’re unaware of how much of a toll the holidays have had on our bodies and minds. We don’t realize that by “going back to normal” and returning to our regular habits, that’s a change in habits too, because we’d been doing something else for weeks.
Because of this, January is a time of recovery and rebalancing. It’s a matter of getting ourselves back on track for the usual again. Since we’re going through all those changes – which we don’t acknowledge as changes because they’re technically what we were doing before the holidays – taking on new ones can be very hard.
We’re already trying to adapt to normal life again after about six weeks of living a completely altered lifestyle. January allows us to ease back into our lives again. It’s what lets us get a more realistic understanding of what changes we will be able to take on for the rest of the year, even if we aren’t ready to take them on yet.
Embrace February Fitness and Nutrition Updates
January is now officially a thing of the past. We’ve had the time to shake off the holidays and sink back into some old routines. We’re familiarizing ourselves with what our lives realistically look like again. Now, in the shortest month of the year, I feel like we’re ready for February fitness and nutrition updates.
We can use this brief month as a bridge to the rest of the year. With a February fitness and nutrition reset, we have the chance to look at where we really are, where we want to be, and what it will take to realistically get us there.
