Do you wish you could enjoy eating healthy foods more? I get it. I felt the same way as you for a long time. A very long time. In my case, I craved salty and fatty stuff. I wanted it for every meal. A lot of times, I had it for every meal, too.

I just didn’t enjoy eating healthy foods. To me, they were bland. They were a punishment. Why have a carrot stick when you can have a Big Mac? It wasn’t really until I met my girlfriend, Bree, that I started getting into the healthier stuff.

To be honest, I didn’t realize that healthy food is just food. It’s not a special category of things that taste bland and bitter. There are a lot of nutritious foods out there. In most cases, it’s just a matter of avoiding processed foods.

If you make a recipe from scratch out of whole foods, the odds are that you’ll have made something nutritious. Ta da! You can enjoy eating healthy foods just as simple as that. That said, if you want some extra tips, you’re in luck. I’ve put my top three together for you.

If you love certain flavors, keep them. Just make sure you pay attention to what is going in to your recipes. If your favorite flavor is “super sweet,” look for other ways to satisfy your sweet tooth other than sugar. I don’t mean look to artificial sweeteners. Don’t get me started on that topic.

There are lots of other ways to enjoy chocolate, spicy food, creamy foods and sweet foods without letting your nutrition take a nose dive. Replacement foods are perfect for this.

Try dark chocolate with a high cocoa content. Eat spicy food you’ve made from scratch, use avocado to satisfy your cravings for creamy textures, eat frozen berries and fruits for that sweet treat. If you haven’t tried frozen grapes, go for it. Choose organic if you can and get ready to taste the best frozen treat/candy you’ve ever had!

Step 2 to Enjoy Eating Healthy Foods: Go to a Fancy Restaurant

Instead of having fast food four times this month, head out to some fine dining just once for a special treat. Not only will the food astound you, but it will be made with far better ingredients.

I’m telling you from experience that healthy foods can taste far better than even your favorite junk food. Bree and I splurged once and went to a Geoffrey Zakarian restaurant. I have never – before or since – experienced anything like the broccoli that was served. I didn’t know broccoli could taste like that!

Great chefs can turn ingredients into something magical. If you want proof that you can enjoy eating healthy foods, let a highly talented chef serve you a meal.

If you want to truly love what you’re eating, you need to observe the flavors. If you’re sitting at your computer eating your lunch as quickly as you can, you will barely taste it. Take a moment to be a bit mindful.

Pay attention to the flavors and textures while you have the food in your mouth. You might discover that there’s a lot more there than you’d realized!
