3 Ways to Stay Fit During the Holidays Without Stressing Yourself

Ways to Stay Fit During the Holidays Without Stress

This year, I’m ready with my top ways to stay fit during the holidays, so I could get my tips and tricks up here before the stresses of the season have the chance to overwhelm you and make you feel like giving up.  That’s the key.  Have a plan in place before you can have the chance to tell yourself that you can’t do it. Because you can do it, as long as you’re doing it right.

Find Ways to Stay Fit During the Holidays that Suit Your Schedule

When it all comes down to it, the best ways to stay fit during the holidays are the ones you’ll actually use.  It’s all well and good to know that you should be doing certain workouts each day, but if you simply won’t do them, then it’s not much of a plan.  That’s why I like to recommend thinking things through early, committing to it, and being practical about it.

It’s also important to know that the ways to stay fit during the holidays may involve certain compromises and understanding that some physical activity is better than nothing.  If you occasionally go for a run or even just a brisk walk or two instead of hitting the gym, don’t feel guilty. You got out there, moved around and got your blood pumping. It’s better than sitting at home and watching yet another Grinch remake. Love that Grinch remake? Good, then watch it from the treadmill or while you use your hand weights.

Ways to Stay Fit During the Holidays Without Going Overboard

Here are my top ways to fit during the holidays this year without stressing yourself out.  Remember that this is already a tense, very busy time of the year. Give yourself a break. Be realistic and practical about your goals.  For example, if your goal is typically to lose weight, make your goal this month maintaining your current weight.  Aim to avoid weight gain, instead of trying to keep losing it. That way, you’ll prevent adding more stress, spoiling your enjoyment of all your favorite traditions, and you’ll keep up a good relationship with your healthy habits.

1 – Habit Stacking

Habit stacking is a fantastic way to quickly add a new step to your routine that will stick over time.  The trick is to use an existing habit to build another one, so you’ll do it automatically.  Just like always brushing your teeth after you shower, for instance, you can add a physical activity to another habit you always do every day.

Think about the things you do every single day.  Do you get up, get dressed and make coffee? Maybe while you’re waiting for the coffee to brew, you can do ten minutes of morning yoga. You get up from your desk at lunchtime, right? Why don’t you go for a five- or ten-minute walk before you eat? Essentially, you’re changing your route to the break room to include some time outside or a few flights up and down the stairs.

2 – Shop on Your Phone While You Exercise

Know you still have a lot of deal hunting to do and stocking stuffer finding to complete? These are great ways to stay fit during the holidays.  The key is to set up your phone or tablet on your treadmill.  You might not be able to do it while you’re running, but you sure can while you’re walking at the start and at the end.  Not a treadmill person? Get ready to do some awesome wall sits. The distraction from your phone will boost your time, and you’ll get your shopping done simultaneously.

3 – Promise Yourself 4 Minutes Every Day

Promise yourself that you will dedicate 4 minutes to a high-intensity workout every day.  You have 4 minutes. Everyone has 4 minutes. It’s not even five.  Set a timer on your phone or fitness tracker and do something intense the entire time.  Sprint (even if it’s on the spot), do burpees, mountain climbers and other exercises, and do them at your highest intensity.  Just 4 minutes per day can help you as one of the most practical ways to stay fit during the holidays.  Even if you don’t hit the gym and if your walk isn’t as long as it usually would be, you’ve done those 4 minutes as a start.  Everything above that is a bonus.
