Research into Mental Imagery

Among the studies conducted on weight loss visualizer techniques was one conducted in the UK at the University of Plymouth by a team consisting of Dr. Linda Solbrig and her colleagues.  They already knew that mental imagery was powerful for this reason, based on prior studies.  They sought to understand which types were the most effective.  They compared Motivational Interviewing (MI, a common talking therapy) with Functional Imagery Training (FIT, a novel approach).

The group that received MI received counseling and guided them to find their own voice to identify what motivates them to make weight loss changes.  The group that received FIT was taught weight loss visualizer techniques, using as realistic a means as possible, for achieving their goal as well as what would help to get them there and what could stand in their way.

FIT equipped the participants to see beyond the hurdles straight to the goal, including means by which to leap over those barriers. That way, each individual’s mind was trained to see challenges as inevitable and a natural part of the process, already preparing themselves to overcome them. The findings were published in the International Journal of Obesity.
