I was stuck in an extraordinarily long line at Bree’s favorite cafe yesterday when I started wondering about pumpkin health benefits. Sure, a lot of the pumpkin spice lattes don’t contain any of the big orange gourd. But what about the products that do? What about all the desserts, dinner sides, casseroles, and even cocktails that contain real puree.
What are Pumpkin Health Benefits?
Pumpkin is a unique type of gourd in that it tastes great in both sweet and savory healthy fall foods. You wouldn’t get excited about an acorn squash coffee, right? Who would want a butternut pie? Still, pumpkin health benefits can also be enjoyed in casseroles.
When I looked into pumpkin health benefits, I was surprised to discover how many there really are. I’ve started to use a quarter cup of puree for egg in some baked goods to make it richer and yet still bind in the same way.
Here’s what I discovered are the advantages from this ingredient that we enjoy at this time of year just by eating our favorite foods.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants are among the most important nutrition benefits of pumpkin. The antioxidants you’ll enjoy include:
- Beta-carotene
- Alpha-carotene
- Beta-cryptoxanthin
Immune System Support
Many of the nutrients in this gourd are great for strengthening the immune system. That’s certainly a welcome benefit at this time of year as cold and flu season kicks off. Among those nutrients include the antioxidants as well as vitamin C. The beta-carotene is specifically helpful as the body converts it to vitamin A, which is helpful with fighting infections.
